1902
  • Vascular surgery was first defined as a field with the initial publication of Alexis Carrel’s work.
1906
  • Goyanes performed the first arterial graft by using the popliteal vein in situ to replace an excised popliteal artery aneurysm.
1907
  • The first free autogenous vein graft was performed by Laxer to replace an axillary artery defect with a segment of greater saphenous vein.
1949  
  • The first successful femoropopliteal bypass with reversed saphenous vein was performed by Kunlin.
1952
  • The Korean War influenced emergence of reconstructive surgery for arterial injuries as initiated by Shumacker.
  • The first report of a synthetic vascular graft appeared by Voorches
1957
  • Dacron grafts became commercially available and established by DeBakey.
1970s
  • The microporous expanded polytetrafluoroethylene(ePTFE) grafts was introduced.
