Autograft, Allograft and Xenograft.

  • Autograft is a procedure where patient having their vessels taken from another graft or site in patient. (eg. long saphenous vein in peripheral vascular surgery. In thoracic surgery the use of internal mammary artery for coronary artery bypass).

  • Allograft is vessel taken from different individual of same species. (eg. externally supported umbilical vein). Allograft accounts for many human transplants, including those from cadaveric, living related and living related donors.  This is also called as an allogeneic graft or a homograft.

  • Xenograft is vessel that are obtained from animals. Primates were first considered to be the potential organ source for xenotransplantation to humans (closest relative to human). Chimpanzees is the best option due similar size of organ and good blood biocompatibility. Extinction of certain primate hinders the harvest of parts from these animals. Pigs are currently thought to be the best candidates for organ donation (readily available & similar siza of organ human & known as porcine). Cows too are also an option in xenotransplantation ( known as borvine). May cause immunologic response due to human body rejecting the parts.
